Scheherazade > The cable lines are what keep the city in touch with the world. Not exactly aesthetic, but durned effective.
Scheherazade > Satellite dishes everywhere. Arab soap operas are... frankly, wonderful : )
Scheherazade > 14 July Bridge... on the OTHER end of this is the (relative) safety of the Green Zone. (Fewer car bombs and no truck bombs). On the other hand, no one was shooting rockets at us in the red zone.

You're familiar with the (fatuous) 'Survivor' TV series? Let's let those who think they're so clever, strong and agile get dropped into Central Baghdad (IN the Red Zone) and see if THEY can 'survive' to make it past the insurgents, through town, over the Tigris, across 14 July bridge, PAST the checkpoints and INTO the Green Zone ... all without getting blown to smithereens, blasted into a million pieces or beheaded along the way.

THAT would take courage, cleverness and smarts!
Scheherazade > Note the generator in the lower right of the photo. Generators are the life blood of most dwellings. Reliable electrical power is still a thing of the future.

The barriers that can be seen beyond the cars keep fast moving vehicles from bearing bad tidings.... not to mention, things that go 'boom' in the night.
Scheherazade > Iraqi soldiers on their way to somewhere.... a free nation where people stop killing each other I hope!
Scheherazade > Not sure if this is a launch or a hit. I looked up to see this smoke column where there had been a (relatively) clear sky just moments before, and then heard (what sounded like) two powerful explosions.

Don't know if they were car bombs or rockets.... a friend over in the Green Zone said they were rocketed (both duds) about this same time.

In case you're wondering, here's how this works:

(Explosion)>phone calls>"you guys ok over there?">"ok, just checking">back to work.>

And, no, I'm NOT exaggerating.

Remember, it's only fun if no one dies.
Scheherazade > Keep your fingers crossed that the day WILL come when soldiers need no longer roam the streets. These are Iraqi trooops. Note the dust mask on the fellow standing.

That dust has got to be murder on one's lungs.
